Abstract

Professor Vervaele was born in Belgium in 1956 but later, due to his professional activities, he obtained Dutch nationality. He holds a Master of Laws and a Master of Criminology from the University of Ghent (Belgium); Doctor of Laws from the University of Antwerp (Belgium). Between 1980 and 1985, he worked as Assistant Researcher in Criminal Law, Criminal Procedural Law at the University of Antwerp. Also, between 1985 and 1987, he was Senior Researcher attached to the Belgian Ministry of Justice. In 1987 he started working at the Netherlands Institute for Social and Economic Law Research (NISER) at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. Then, after the defense of his doctoral thesis in 1988 in Antwerp, on ius puniendi, he was appointed Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure and obtained the prestigious PIONIER scholarship awarded by the Dutch Council for Scientific Research, for the project entitled The Enforcement of European Law, between 1991 and 1997.
