Abstract

Cuba is located 531 km from the coast of the United States, 1921 km from Colombia (1081 km from the San Andres Archipelago), 2549 km from Mexico and 1135 km from Honduras, to name just a few countries. Distances easily covered, in a sea whose transit is massive if one takes into account that some twenty states have sovereign access to its waters. Therefore, if we are to speak of Cuba's geopolitical importance, we could not begin with anything other than its privileged geographical position in the Caribbean basin, which undoubtedly makes this island a vital point on the security agenda of the American continent as a whole.
