Abstract

Throughout modern human history, protest has played a fundamental role in the struggle for the guarantee of rights. Particularly since the Industrial Revolution, with the rise of second-generation rights, protest has become one of the most widely used mechanisms to demand the satisfaction of basic needs such as education, health and decent work. Although today protest is a common mechanism of social participation, its origins are far from commonplace. As Oliver Fillieule and Danielle Tartakowsky point out in their 2020 work, protest has had a long trajectory that deserves to be studied in depth, especially in the current context of upheaval in the Latin American region.
