Independent cinema in Cuba, Cuban civil society

Abstract

Independent cinema in Cuba has historical roots and diverse antecedents, taking into account not only the need for Cuban filmmakers to reclaim their space within Cuban civil society, but also the debate on film production outside the institutional margins of the ICAIC It goes back to the institution’s beginnings, to a decade as confrontational and decisive on the cultural and ideological level as the 1960s. Unquestionably, independent cinema in Cuba has been an area of Cuban culture that historically has aroused the interest of journalists and critics, but the same has not happened in the academic sphere, except for certain foreign and national researchers, including Anne Marie Stock, the Cubans Dean Luis Reyes and Juan Antonio García Borrero and others who have studied the subject from various angles.
