Abstract

Many Cuban literary studies refer to the participation of the Cuban intellectuals in the social processes that took place on the island since the very beginnings of that nation. Although most of these studies speak of the leading role of intellectuals in the struggle against Spanish colonial power, dictatorships or corrupt democracies in the first half of the 20th century, only a few speak of the intellectual responsibility in the consolidation of the mechanisms of censorship, cultural and political repression in the revolutionary period (1959 to the present). Based on a four decades of experience as a protagonist of Cuban culture on the island and in the diaspora, the author reflects on this phenomenon.
