The Government of López Obrador and The Dispute over the Configuration of the Political Field

Abstract

This essay critically analyzes the kind of leftism that the triad lopezobradorismo-The National Regeneration Party and the Fourth Transformation represent and the dispute over the configuration of the political field since López Obrador won the presidency in 2018. The political field is being reshaped along new lines of conflict traced by the populist rhetoric that divides the political field between the people and the neoliberal elites from the old regime. Like all populism, the lopezobradorismo is in tension with some rules and values of democracy and has generated conflicts with actors which have become critical publics of the presidential strategy of confrontation but also of the austerity policies implemented by the government which are more conservative than progressive.  A new political stage of restructuration of the public space has been opened.
