Availability and Credibility of Official Cuban Statistics

Abstract

This article evaluates the availability and reliability of Cuban statistics. Notes that usually there are no alternative statistics due to barriers to conduct free independent field research in Cuba. Among three positions, two of them extreme (rejection or total acceptance) takes the intermediate one that these statistics should be used but subjecting them to a series of filters and distinguishing their quality. As an indicator of reliability of part of the statistics, it proves that they demonstrate key economic-social aspects that are negative. Analyzes five cases of data manipulation or distortion. Ends with recommendations on how to use Cuban statistics.
