Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), have positioned themselves as a significant factor for global economic growth and wealth creation. A clear example is Colombia, which supports its economy in these businesses, where that at least 90% of the national business park is constituted by SMEs, with micro-enterprises. In addition, SMEs generate a large percentage of employment and of production of the sectors: industrial, commercial and services. This article seeks to establish the fundamental concepts, results and generic characteristics that define small and medium-sized enterprises regionally and then nationally, and to conduct an exploratory analysis of their role in the Colombian economy.

This article is part of the research on the insertion of ICT (Information and communication technologies) in the Colombian PYMEs (small and medium enterprises), submitted to fulfill the requirements of a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences, University of Nebrija (Spain).
