Abstract

On May 4, 2020, after a long life dedicated to research and reflection, one of the most enlightened scholars that criminology -especially critical criminology- has seen over the last fifty years left this earthly existence; we are referring to the unforgettable Roberto Bergalli who, after escaping the dictatorship in his country Argentina, settled in Spain where, according to his closest disciples, he created the School of Critical Criminology of Barcelona, which he led for four decades. Bergalli was nourished by the English, German, Italian, Spanish and Latin American academies and his ideas, added to the critical criminology movement whose foundations were laid by Walton, Taylor and Young in the sixties of the last century in England, have dominated the spectrum of currents that call for a different way of understanding criminal law, criminology, criminal policy and, in general, the criminal issue.
