Cuba: a dream that never existed

The role of the pre-revolutionary bourgeois elites in the Cuban state has been marked by desertion, desperation and corruption.

The desire to avoid losing everything led those who had certain wealth to take desperate measures after Castro's triumph, even though they lost large percentages of their fortunes. However, those who left the island still play an important role in the economy, mainly through remittances. Moving forward in time, we find that the change of elites that took place after the Revolution meant that only those linked to the Communist Party represented the power elite of the State. However, those who decided to stay in Cuba, mostly the working class who hoped for the arrival of social justice and popular democracy, continue to face widespread misery, corruption, shortages and authoritarianism of the regime, leading to despair. Increasingly, what was hoped for after the Cuban Revolution seems nothing more than false promises, and life on the island is driven by nostalgia for what could have been and never came.
