Abstract

LGBTIQ+ people have faced discrimination, violence and persecution for centuries in a Latin American society characterized by machismo and cis-hetero normative standards. Latin American history has also been surrounded by military coups, dictatorships and war, putting democracy in the region under constant threat; the political struggle waged in each country has instrumentalized the LGBTIQ+ sectors, especially in times of conflict, either by criminalizing their existence and associating it with the derogatory, or by ideologically appropriating their struggle.
