Crisis of social and economic rights in Cuba: Interview with Food Monitor Program
Abstract
The economic and social crisis in Cuba has reached critical levels, manifesting itself with particular severity in the food insecurity faced by millions of Cubans. With uncontrolled inflation, widespread shortages of basic commodities and a collapsed rationing system, the Cuban population is facing one of the most difficult periods since the so-called “Special Period” of the 1990s. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated long-standing structural problems in the Cuban economic model, while the ‘monetary order’ policies implemented by the government have had devastating effects on the purchasing power of the population.
