Abstract

Guatemala's 2019 general elections were held against the backdrop of a failed presidency, that of Jimmy Morales. Spurred by popular anti-establishment fervor, in the context of the popular uprisings of 2015, Morales won that election under the slogan "neither corrupt nor lardon," with the promise of a new way of doing politics. But his shortcomings as a political outsider were enormous, weighed down by his enormous inexperience, at the head of a party created and dominated by the military, and his alliances with corrupt sectors. Many experts qualified him as the worst government in the country's democratic era (post-1985). Therefore, it is in a context of great popular dissatisfaction and frustrated hopes that the 2019 election is taking place.
