Analysis of the 2018 draft constitution in non-government Cuban media

Abstract

This article will focus on the debate surrounding the 2018 draft constitution in 15 non-government Cuban media. For this purpose, we make a content analysis to 311 texts published between August 13 an November 15, 2018.  The texts tackled 121 specific topics that were grouped into 7 general topics with a focus on questions related to citizens' rights, Cuban government and State structures and the Communist Party. There was an overall negative reaction towards the fundamental issues of the Cuban political model, even though there was also a general acknowledgment of the pros of the draft constitution. One of the highlights was the propositive character of many texts that led to valuable additions to the draft Constitution.
