Dossier: Dialogues on hunger in Cuba
Vol. 7 No. 64 (2024)In the 2023 Food Monitor Program (held the workshop History of Hunger in Cuba. More than two dozen activists and researchers worked on the different connotations of food crises, using the terms food insecurity, undernourishment, chronic hunger and hidden hunger as a tutor code.
Two main approaches were sociological and gender studies, as well as quantitative, to address the statistics made by the Food Monitor Program in the Hunger Map and the National Food Security Survey. In addition to the analysis of the socioeconomic, political, and cultural characteristics in Cuba, the historical evolution of hunger as a world scourge and its relationship with political administration were discussed.
Finally, students were asked to reflect on the impact of changes in food production and consumption patterns in Cuba. Food Monitor Program shares some of these essays, as well as other reflections by observatory columnists, which contribute to addressing hunger as a conditioning factor present in daily life, with important ramifications in other areas such as work, education, health, and citizen security; as well as a tool to be used by authoritarian governments for political control.
Note: Given the sensitive subject matter and the data protection policy of the Food Monitor Program, the authorship of our researchers and collaborators are listed as protected persons.
